Get the benefits that you deserve

Preparing for your SSD appeal

If you applied for Social Security disability benefits and were denied, you have the option to appeal your claim. The appeals process can take years to complete, so it is important that you prepare in advance anytime you have a hearing or go before a judge. Preparation can mean the difference between a denied and rejected application, no matter how badly you need the benefits.

Come with medical evidence

Your medical records are the most important piece of evidence you have that you need benefits. Make sure yours are up to date before your appeal. Once you receive a Notice of Hearing with the date of your scheduled hearing, you should start updating your medical records from the providers who treated you most recently. Always keep a copy for yourself.

You will also want your doctor’s opinion when it comes to medical evidence. Get supportive statements from your physician that are up to date about your current condition. A detailed letter from your physician can go a long way toward proving that you are unable to work because of your condition.

Presentation matters

The way you present yourself during the appeal is important. Dress appropriately and avoid dirty, ragged clothes. There is no need to purchase a brand-new outfit, particularly when you are on a limited budget, but it goes a long way toward showing a judge that you respect the court if you dress as nicely as possible.

Ask for special exceptions

Your hearing should not take too long, but if it is difficult for you to stand or sit for long periods of time, do not be afraid to request to move around or stretch. Your judge may even be expecting this type of request, as most applicants have some sort of injury or illness.

Speak to a professional

It is vital for your livelihood that you receive the benefits you need when you are unable to work anymore. To improve your chances of getting approved at your appeal, consult with an attorney that understands the process.
